Unit 24

P1: Job roles:

Cinematographer:
This job role is an important role in the TV/film industry as you are pretty much in charge of the camera crew that is on set and you are responsible for the artistic decisions for that image. The cinematographer is the one that selects the camera, filters, lens and the film stock.

Short Description on each:

Producer: The producer plans out the TV/film productions. For example the selecting script, directing and editing, arranging finance. They also need to try and find the right cast and crew for this production.

Director: A director is responsible for the overall look and sound of the film. They are the ones that need to translate the written script into reality. If the film gets wither bad or good feedback, it's the directors responsibility. The directors always work closely with the editors through the editing process to be able to achieve the final product.

1st assistant director:Their main priorities are to help assist the director, help with the co-ordination of production, and supervise the cast and crew. Before shooting the film, the first AD's job is to come up with a workable shooting schedule. Other tasks include locations, equipment is available, and props.

cinematographer: This role means the employee has to create the dream look of the film by using framing, camera movement, shots, and lighting. They work very closely with the camera crew to make sure the shots are correct.

Art Director:They work with the production designer and bring all their creations alive for the sets. They don't just work on films, they have a wide range from commercials to small productions. When the script is written and approved of, a copy is sent off to the art director along with the schedules as they then have to get sketches and ideas up and out.

Gaffer:They are responsible for the lighting and all electrics. The name 'gaffer' means the movement of equipment to help control lighting levels with a gaff.

Production manager:This role includes co-ordination, planning, and manufacturing processes They over look all this to make sure it's running smoothly.

Sound designer/Recording: In charge of the sound for the on screen action within that show/film. They make sure it's all being recorded and the levels are equal.

Grip:Work's closely with the camera crew as their support. They help when the camera is stationed on something that is difficult to control, for example a crane or dolly.

Jobs you are interested in:

I'm only interested in one job role at this time which is told below.

Industry: Film
Job roll: Film Editor/ assistant editor

Business/self employment opportunities:

Start out asking around companies to see if you can get a opportunity to arise. Try to gain experience by starting with smaller jobs and then climb up to bigger stuff after awhile. Show work you have done yourself and the ideas you have came up with.

Employment opportunities including apprentices:

Edit Runner/Assistant Apprentice in Brighton: assist the post production team with current and on going projects. Digitising materials prior to editing, play-outs & library management. Apprentice Videographer & Video Editor: go to various locations and editing the videos. Need to work with minimal direction and be fine with taking the creative lead.

Education options:
College then go to university if it helps you with the course and if you would like to or you can go straight out and look for an apprentice opportunity and or just go for a normal job.

Industry: Advertising and market

Job roll: Media Planner

Business/self employment opportunities:
I could set my own business up as a self employment unit and offer my business and work to other companies or production teams. This could turn out to be successful as there are many advertisement teams that would like a media planner.

Employment opportunities including apprenticeships:
This job is a great opportunity to get into a team with a long contract. The job role includes hands on management, attending marketing meetings, traveling, etc.
I can't find any apprenticeships online for a media planner but i'm sure if you were to go down to an apprentice evening or an career office then you would be able to find something.

 https://www.totaljobs.com/job/senior-strategic-planner/michael-page-marketing-job68482331?entryurl=%2fjobs%2fmedia-planner%3fwt.mc_id%3da_se_google_sec-media-exact-nv_media-planner_media%2520planner%2520jobs_%5b*engineaccountid*%5d%2368482331

Education options:
I would need qualifications in a related area as this would help with the training and the knowledge. This is also helpful as media planners are normally taken up through their graduate schemes. If they aren't looked at through taken graduate schemes then there is a small chance of being taken through apprenticeships.

Industry: Video games design

Job Roll: Game designer

Business/self employment opportunities:
I think with going self employed in the gaming world you need to be able to know others that are in that department so you have chances of work when needed. You also need to be able to get your name out there and state what you do and why your self employed. There are quite a few self employed game designers who are out there and they are doing well as they work with smaller companies who aren't to well known and they also work for bigger companies. They take all types as it's different opportunities and they have time due to them having their own schedules.

Employment opportunities including apprenticeships/ Further education:
The image above is of a job that is going in Amsterdam, and they are looking for game designers with the company Aardvark Swift. They are a growing company so at the moment it would be easier to get a interview/place with them as they aren't as demanding.
However i can't find any apprenticeships for this department but i have found further education options. For example, in the image below there are some options for more education on the different sections in the gaming world.

P2 EVALUATE YOUR OWN QUALITIES

Before you write a CV you need to make a list of your:

a) Personal characteristics
.Good time keeping, always on time. Has improved over the years.
. Like to talk to anyone, especially new people.
. Got good flexibility when needing to work
. I have a lot of determination when it comes to my work, i like to keep going at it.
. Get along with others.

 b) Skills
. I'm good and enjoy coming up with creative thoughts and writing.
. I can edit well when something is needed.
. I work very well with others. I like to get everyone involved and hear what they all have to say.
. I can draw so storyboarding is great for me and i love figuring out what goes where on the paper.
. I can work well in pre-production with only a little help at times if rushed.

c) Relevant achievements
.I have qualifications in Media, Business, and Maths. All A's and B's.
.I used to play rugby but due to an injury i had to stop. I still watch all matches when they are on.

d) Experience and interests
. I've worked as a babysitter, Tills/ floor/delivery at Tiger Tiger, and Floor/Tills at Nandos.

. I like to travel, and travel a lot to America when i can.
. Cooking is a passion of mine and I try to make something new everyday if possible.
. I'm also in love with history and museums.

2) Strengths
I have great knowledge in creative writing and thinking as this was a passion of mine in school for 5 years. It has just followed me into my older years which has came in handy when at college in my media lessons as you need to have a creative mind set for most of the units. I'm good at drawing storyboards up for people  if they get stuck or have no idea on how to do it. I'm interested in script writing and feel like i might take it up one day in the near future but right now i'm focusing on the more creative side. I tend to enjoy most things that i try, for example risk assessments, recce reports, logging footage. Just things that most people don't tend to like.

3) "Personal and Professional Development Opportunities'
I'd like to develop my skills in being more social and to improve my time management even more as it's good now but at times it could be better.

  • I would like to become much more better in the editing section of the media. This is due to my enjoyment of editing but not being the best with it. I can edit but can't add to many effects or transitions due to my lack of knowledge. Again i know how to do the pre-production but at times i do need help

P3 - Personal resources audit

2) Evaluate your Resources

STRENGTHS -
. Hard worker
    . Creative mind
. Good at listening
. Good at reading
. Good time management

WEAKNESSES  -
. Over analyse situations
. Worry a lot
. Don't give myself enough credit
. Very closed off (don't speak to others)

OPPORTUNITIES - Camera can to taking photos which could be seen from professionals which could then lead to getting credit or even a job.
I travel by bus mostly which can get me to a lot of locations at times.

THREATS:   Technology could change or break with work on it, this could get rid of the work thats on the software. I won't have access to the equipment and software once done with college so i will have a little trouble getting that back.

P4: Flow diagram for careers

In the diagram that I have created, I hope to get an apprenticeship a few months after I finish college or as fast as I can. Once i get that apprenticeship I hope to stay with it for a few years to gain experience for my own good and CV. After a few years I hope to travel to another country for a job to get a different sense of work ethic and location.
Below is a career that I was looking at with information on what it is and where.

I also emailed a music company in London about work experience which is shown below.

Below is two screenshots that I took from the UMG website for apprenticeships/work experience, or an actual job.  I'm interested in the commercial services and the digital media section.

I hope to apply and get an apprenticeship later this year in September. The apprenticeship will hopefully either be in the music production, editing, or could be in something else completely. Then I'm hoping to stay with that company for 5+ years and if I'm offered a permanent place there and I like it then I might stay and see where that takes me. But if I'm not then I hope to look for jobs in other countries and see what else there is for me.

Below is some more apprenticeships that i've looked further into.

Contingency

My plan for if this first plan doesn't go through is to either get a office job in the media industry or to try freelance work and start my own business based around editing and or music production. I have contacts in the freelance world who could help me with the finance section and the start up of the business. I also found this website (below) that can help you get started and or find freelance workers that need some partners and or helpers.

What i've been working on since P2/P3

STRENGTHS -

Hard worker
    . Creative mind
. Good at listening
. Good at reading
. Good time management

These skills above will help me progress into my older years within the industry as they all apply to having a good ethic at work. For example having good time management is one of the best things to have as it shows you are serious about the job and you are ready to learn and work. This is one of my best qualities and I will continue to keep it as one.

WEAKNESSES  -

. Over analyse situations
. Worry a lot
. Don't give myself enough credit
. Very closed off (don't speak to others)

The above are points that won't make a good work ethic for me in the future as it will cause me to worry to much about myself and my work. I will have to continue to work on these for years as I have been since I was 12 years old. I don't think it was effect me to much as i will be busy with work but there are points where I put my work down and don't think its good enough so I redo it over and over when it doesn't need it. This will have to be treated before I get into a proper job where there are deadlines and planning etc.

I think I've further developed my skills of woking in pre-production as for my free choice I have to do it by myself and the production is researching a lot and writing case studies etc. This has taught me on how to plan and pitch things to myself and others. For example, I pitched an idea of mine that I was going to do for a outside project for myself to my brother and his two friends. I would've never of done that a few months back as I didn't have the confidence in myself and my work. But now as I've grown and worked with others and have had to pitch in class several times, I'm able to speak out to crowds and or a few people.

P5: Creating letter template/Planning to write a letter

P5: Prepare for work, business/self-employment opportunity

  •  A job application - this needs to be for an actual job.
I've picked a job application as it's good practice for me to fill them out for future jobs. It for a real company but it isn't in the media industry as I thought it would be different to show something else. Some of the information is mixed or made up as I didn't want to put real addresses or numbers of the people mentioned within it. But it gives the element of a real application and two real companies. But information has been secured at points.

Personal statement

Below I'm going to write a short personal statement about why I think I would be good for the job that i'm applying for.

I'm applying for this job role as I personally think I could do well working at Tiger Tiger by bringing a high standard of professionalism and team work to the table. In my last job I brought a mixture of professional working, friendly team working, and optimism which not only helped myself to progress and grow but my other colleagues to also as we helped one another. Getting this job would help myself expand in the business world and teach me  new ways of learning and working which would push me to try harder at what I do.  I'm a positive, friendly, and outgoing person that always tries to get others involved and help them along the way if they need help. I stick to what is asked of me from each job and always stick to the rules that are set out.

P6/M3/D1: Create a showreel, portfolio and home page

Below is my showreel of work that i've done in video format. It goes in order of oldest to newest with snippets of each video. I have given titles of what each one is before they start and in the corner of each video I have wrote how I participated in them.

Project 1:Unexpected. For this project I was the photographer, editor, director, and special effects
Project 2: The Last Ones Standing. My role was special effects make up, sound, and at times cinematographer.
Project 3: Darklands. In this I was director, editor, and special effects make up.
Project 4: I'm Coming Out. I did a mix of things, like cinematographer, lighting, and art director.
Project 5: James White Music video I was involved with being the art director, producer, and music player when recording.

In the showreel you can see that my progress has evolved over the years that i have been doing media. In the first project (Unexpected), my colour correction and gradient wasn't great and was hardly used or was over used at different times which makes it look like a rushed project when I actually spent quite a while doing it step by step. Whereas in James White's 'Take Me Home' you can see I used different cuts, colour gradient (which i practiced with), and montage editing. These three different things I didn't know how to use a year ago.
Within this showreel I'm trying to showcase my love of special effects and editing. My style of editing is simple which is what it's always been. I like how it can look so effective and eye catching without all the add ons which can make it look busy.

BLOGGER
Some of my work being shown on the website Blogger. Below my work is showing different sections, a photography/trailer work, a radio interview, and a music event planning. These are my three passions that I hope to bring with me in the future wherever I go. I love to do all three and show the planning of each on a blog that others can see.
Blogger gives me the chance to showcase anything i'd like to show to others. It also takes me away from reality and into a world that I love which is writing about things that i'm passionate about.
The links to each of the blogs are below each image.
